Stonewall

The lesbian, gay and bisexual charity Stonewall recently approached Barry to design some promotional material for a new Youth Volunteering Programme that it was going to be running. The material had to appeal to a 16-25 year old audience whilst addressing homophobic bullying in the workplace, at school, college and elsewhere. The approach uses silhouettes of young people with random backgrounds that make them look commonplace rather than out of place. A tough and uncompromising font is used for key headlines.

Ben Locker & Associates

The Diana Award

We’ve featured work that we’ve done for this charity before, and we’re very proud to continue to do so — not least with this particular example. It’s a bit of a milestone for the Diana Award and for Barry too. It’s the tenth year that he’s designed materials for the Diana team and he has seen them grow into the extraordinarily successful champion of young people that it is today.

Felbrigg Hall

Barry was really delighted to be asked by the National Trust to produce this watercolour illustration of North Norfolk’s Felbrigg Hall. The A2 painting draws upon Barry’s longstanding love of watercolours and drawing and was a pleasant diversion from the usual keyboard and mouse!

Greenlight Trust

This is a simple annual review for the local charity Greenlight Trust, whose mission is to bring communities to life by working with nature and encouraging each individual to play their role in safeguarding its future. The single A2 sheet (100% recycled paper) folds right down to a pocket-sized A6. Words and photographs were interpreted with traditional typography, the use of old engravings and ‘flowers and flourishes’ (or typographic symbols). One of the biggest bonuses for the client was that Barry was able to negotiate a one-off donation of free printing by Alpha Print (www.alphaprint.co.uk) – a sympathetic and like-minded local supplier here in East Anglia.

King’s College London

We are delighted that we can boast a nine-year relationship with King’s College London. King’s College London Business Ltd provides a gateway for business and the public sector to access the wealth of knowledge and expertise available at King’s College London. It is celebrated here in its publication ‘Acknowledge’.

Open Road Exhibition

Open Road is an Essex based charity that strives to reduce the harmful impact of drugs and alcohol on users, their families, partners and society. Working in close collaboration with fundraising consultant, Mark Ereira-Guyer and photographers Harland Payne, Barry set about designing a travelling, photographic exhibition that covered some of the issues experienced by Open Road clients. The exhibition system uses door blanks and custom-made connectors as a less expensive alternative to the usual ‘pop up’ systems.

Open Road

Thames Alive

Barry was flattered to be asked to design a logotype for Thames Alive, an organisation that promotes the Thames and organises major river events. Its members stage the annual Great River Race and, in 2005, organised the Emirates Thames Nelson Flotilla between Greenwich and Embankment, attracting huge numbers of spectators. More recently, this device was used by Historic Royal Palaces in its spectacular Tudor river pageant of June 2009, which marked the 500th anniversary of King Henry VIII’s coronation.

Young Concern Trust

Young Concern Trust is a small charity based in Harlow, Essex and its aim is to provide a free counselling service to young people who live, work, train or go to school in the town and the surrounding areas. It provides a seamless support service to young people who, often, are from very disadvantaged backgrounds. The robust but distressed logotype plays on a sense of discordance, but emphasis inner strength.
